Pay-per-click (PPC)
Think PPC might work for you but don't know where to start?
What is PPC?
When someone puts a search phrase or term into a search engine like Google, Google then delivers up results based on that search term. For most search terms the results page will be made up of 'natural' listings (those that have used organic SEO activities to get there) and paid listings (those that are using PPC to get there). The paid listings are usually displayed at the top of the page or down the right hand side (they used to be inside a box called 'sponsored listings' on Google but are now in a box simply called 'Ads').
If the person searching clicks on one of the paid ads, the owner of that ad will be charged a fee by the search engine (in this example, Google) for the click - hence the title pay-per-click. If no-one clicks on the paid ad, the advertiser doesn't get charged.
It sounds very simple but getting PPC right can be a complicated business and getting it wrong can be expensive.
The benefits of PPC
- Organic SEO and other on- and off-line marketing take time to work but PPC is fairly immediate - you can set up an ad campaign one minute and it can be working the next.
- Because of this immediacy you can run time-bound and short lead-in time campaigns - for example, 'for this week only' offers
- PPC is fantastic for testing - you can try different things on your website to see what works best
- PPC provides a wealth of information that can inform your other marketing activities
- You can run unlimited keyword campaigns through PPC
- PPC is quantifiable - you know exactly how much you're spending per visitor to your website
- PPC is attraction marketing at its best - the people who click on your ad are people interested in what you have to offer - that means more targetted traffic to your website
